Library Accessibility 101: Because People with Disabilities Need Libraries  Online

This presentation will provide some basic knowledge on disability etiquette and discuss the pivotal role libraries play for people with disabilities. We will also discuss some challenges libraries face such as service animals vs. emotional support animals, disability that manifests in behavioral issues that may challenge the library environment, and why libraries are important for the wellbeing of people with disabilities.

Shirley Madewell, MPH, has worked in diverse roles within the field of public health for 23 years. Throughout her career, Ms. Madewell has sought opportunities to reduce health inequity among populations that experience institutionalized prejudice, bias, marginalization, and harm. She has worked directly with underserved populations in roles at both the community, state, and private level.  Currently she is the Manager for the Disability and Health Program within the NYSDOH Bureau of Community Chronic Disease Prevention. In this role, Ms. Madewell works to improve health and wellbeing of people with disabilities through development of education and resources, public health initiatives, and strategic collaborations.

This public program is made possible by federal Library Service and Technology Act funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, which enable the New York State Library to champion lifelong learning.
